New Server, New Look
November 10, 2003 Dr. Laniac's Laboratory enters a new era.
Yes, I'm now running my weblog on the LoopyCMS, having just finished work on it, and migrated my system to a new 2.2GHz P4 box running Windows Server 2003. Thanks to Microsoft for their program for developers and consultants, I got the somewhat cheezily named Microsoft Action Pack Subscription. MAPS, as it's called comes with a raft of MS software, including 10 XP and Office XP licenses, Exchange, 2K3 Server, etc, etc, etc. for $299/year.
Ah, how sweet it is. My old 550MHz P3 box was old and getting noisier by the day thanks to an aging power supply. My new server, while nothing special (just a stripped down Dell Optiplex) is more than enough to run my websites, email system and other generic server tasks.
IIS 6 was the big deal in the bargain, as it's quite revamped, for the better. And only minor code revisions are necessary - 404 error message pages now include the port they're redirecting from and the COM object for sending email is now the full CDO, instead of the quick and dirty CDONTS. I had been getting a little worried that I was gonna have issues when I switched the CMS over to 2K3, but it was glitch free.
I hope to be more active with the weblog again, now that I should have a little more time not spent writing code, although such dreams frequently come to naught as I have the code bug pretty seriously and my commitment as a publisher, well, is somewhat less ardent.
